Repaired this radio yesterday.
Electros and paper caps, fired it up and runs really well. With 6J8G.
Still doing more research before I get stuck into the cabinet, clean and safety work.
Thanks for the info so far.

Your pictures jumped out at me. I'll send some picture of my Commodore chassis which may be the 'base' design to your radio prior the upgrade.
I'm still researching-----pointers indicate a NZ touch, but whenever I use the word 'Commodore' everyone tries to sell me a Holden.

Things of interest:
The Arts &P label they are date related;
Dial Assy is probably EFFCO;
Resistors are the same as the originals in a 1938 Airzone 609 chassis on the bench and some big ones in an English HMV / Marconi monster here that has both them & newer.
Amplion: Is a stand alone company but AWA tended to use speakers, that were a lot like them & branded AWA
Transformer looks like a Henderson.
Check the band spread a 6J8 will work in a 6A8 socket, so it may not need a circuit change, unless it mucks up band spread like in an Astor JJ.
Not everyone use Channex caps albeit they were Ducon.
There were over 100 manufacturers of radios in Australia.
I put it at around mid thirties toward war time.

It's always interesting seeing the materials used in place of what plastic later replaced.
Tar and cotton seems to be a big player in production in insulation back then

Thanks for all the info coming in, some from different source's.
Possibly made by LEKMEKS (australasia) 1931 to 1939.
That made similar looking radios and kit sets.
Distributed by Lawrence and Hanson.
The wiring around the octal socket is cloth covered as the rest and I would say factory or the person that built it . Original.
Probably did use a 6A8G originally, replaced with 6J8G at some time. Looks clean compared to the untouched rest.(the valve).
All the caps in this radio were not original, and were probably last changed in the 1950's.
So, ID from caps not accurate.
Would like to write the providence of this radio down as I normally do with circuit in envelope inside radio.
For future "finger pokers".
But have not got it all together yet, may even have been a prototype.

Unless some one used what ever was on the bench, which was common practice with some service people, which when the set has been tampered with, which the 609 had been, with two disconnected modern 0.4 caps and a few others that did nor appear in the parts list, one cannot guarantee accuracy.
Having a parts runout as I have mentioned before has seen last years rear end married to the new model and vice versa.
The step to 6J8 is logical as 6A7 / 6A8 is not renown for its stability especially with AGC. and 6J8 with its separate triode exciter is going to produce more modulation at the higher frequencies. Which is why the pentagrids like it were used on SW sets.

That's not such a bad thing. Even though there are still millions of them on the road, the closure of Holden's factories a few years ago has more or less immortalised the Lion. I've a mate who owns a VT Commodore SS with only 55,000km on the clock. My mechanic offered him $50,000 for it without even wanting to know the condition or even if it had rego.
My Commodore sadly has 430,000km on it. Everything still works and it still hauls arse but it won't fetch dollars like that for a long, long time. For many Holdens though, the price is rising.

My Commodore is also my last car I will ever buy. It is one of the last Aussie built. My first car was a Holden so is my last.
I anticipate sooner than later I will dial up a flying car and will be transported anywhere I want with minimum fuss. I can't wait. If they can deliver pizzas with drones they can deliver me to the supermarket and back.

It is amazing just how many older cars are about, albeit if its 10years old, or more irrespective of its condition, they don't want to know about it as a trade in. I love the transition to Hydrogen. Dangerous stuff. I have used it for welding & cutting (underwater) burns clear.
Just think that in the future you can be driving your own Hydrogen bomb.
I would wonder with the effluxion of time if Holden will have a cult following like my 1951 TED-20 Ferguson that I can replace pretty much ever part of new. Blew the head gasket end of 2019, minor drama, only thing holding back repair was Christmas. However, the little niggles that had developed since last major overhaul (35 years prior) were repaired, while waiting for the cylinder head.
Doubt we will be able to do that with the electronics etc. of the modern ones. At least the Ute has some tractor parts & those are gettable.

JJ and Brad,
About to email them now JJ but don't expect the quality we see here--whatever magic gear Brad has in his lab must have come from Mars.
