G'day folks, I have just picked up a very nice consul set but it has no brand name on it.
The chassis has 5DWA.6C7 stamped into it and the valve line up is as follows: AK2, AF3, ABC1, AL3, AZ3 ( all P base tubes) and a 6E5 magic eye.
It is dual wave and has a very fancy speaker box affair that directs the back wave from the speaker to the front of the box.
It has been suggested it may be a Briton of 1936 or perhaps an Essanay.
Anyome out there have a clue ?

If it was an Essanay you'd probably know straight away. Most of the Essanay consoles I've seen have had very distinctive and detailed tuning dials. In the photo shown just below is off a large Essanay mantel set but they were almost the same across the board I think.
To be honest I have never seen the valve compliment listed but then again P based valves were not very common in Australia and I am not even sure why they appeared even in the very small numbers they were used in here.
Do you have a picture of the receiver? If so I can include it in your post if you e-mail it to Bradmail.vintage-radio.com.au.

G'day Brad
I will put photos on my web page tonight and then put a link up here. I have just taken it apart and I have found the cabinet makers name under the chassis shelf.
Hart and Creer Roebuck Street Mile End (SA)
Just been talking to Lee Paltridge and he is of the opinion it was made by Vasco, either for them or for Stromberg Carlson perhaps.
He has also suggested it may be an Operatic.

Further information !
It has penciled under the chassis OK 12/2/37 and an initial that looks like A L and another letter I cant work out.
Beginning to look like it could be a National/Stromberg Carlson but who was it made for ?

The valve combination is virtually the same as several Philips sets. (6501, 6505)
6604 (1938) is the only one in AOSM with a tuning indicator, it uses the "P" based EM1 which is similar to the six pin 6E5
One could speculate that Philips engineered the circuit for their valves and it was reproduced "under licence"?
Operatic made 05DWA, PR5DWA Used AL2 not AL3 (EL33) and no tuning indicator. Zenith also used those Philips valves.
AL2 & AL3 are both pentodes but are not the same.
Self bias resistor (cathode), suggested in Philips data book EL33 150 ohm (-6V) AL2 625 Ohm (-25V) This info is a clue for wrong valve fitment, if they are not marked on the chassis or card.
Grid Voltage is in respect to cathode (not chassis)
Happy hunting
