I'm after a 160mm round speaker, but Jaycar doesn't have anything like it, at least not online. Any ideas? Original is 8 ohm, 3 watt.

(backstory) I noticed a speaker had stopped working on my hifi. I traced it to the voice coil being completely open circuit, even though the speaker looked absolutely brand new. I found an old Magnavox to replace it, but I'd like to get a new one if possible.

The 160mm measurement is diagonal across the screw holes - I assume that's the proper way to measure the size.

A voice coil open circuit is a bit unusual. Is it possible to dissect the existing speaker and make sure it is not just one of the tiny wires from the coil to the terminal broken, just below the spider?

A valve a day keeps the transistor away...

So, nominally a 6 inch speaker? In that case, car audio speakers may be suitable -- impedance depending.

Looks like car speaker shops have a good range, but the prices... I don't think I want to spend that much.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

Maybe check out Gumtree and/or wreckers.

Or stick with your Aussie-made Magnavox speaker which may well have better specs than your newer one.
And will probably last longer!

What is the type number on the speaker and I can tell you more about it.

6" Speakers seam to be one of the hardest to get at a reasonable price. The speaker in the Philips 123l here is 6": It had the cone drilled putting in a new transformer (wrecked it).Goose didn't know how to wire the feedback either.

However, Mitsubishi Magna had that size in the door and I was able to luck it in at a local car radio dealer and get a new one.

I have seen the hair thin wire break on the cone. Sometimes you can fix it. If its on a DC output, make sure it is not wired backwards.
When correct the cone should jump outwards. Seen a couple of VC cylinders destroyed by smashing into the rear of the pole.

They should be a standard hole spacing?

No, on the Magnavox.....

Foster speakers are generally bottom of the market.

I can't read the marking on the Magnavox, it has rubbed off or faded away over the years.

Does the magnet have a plastic cover over it? Is the cover red?

If so, you have a 6WR and it is a very good speaker.

Finally got to remove the 12 screws from the back of the speaker box so I could have a look.

No plastic. The magnet is painted black, and I think the model number is BP1 (or maybe 3P1) - it's difficult to tell. The sticker on the back of the magnet has the manufacturer info, and that it's made in Sydney. Another sticker on the side has the various patent numbers and otherwise damaged. The rest of the speaker is unmarked, apart from some letters on the cone. The last 4 letters are ASEX - any preceeding letters are hidden behind the frame.

I've put the box back together, and I'd rather not open it again if possible.

Hey, if it sounds OK, and it should, leave it alone!

Magnavox speakers were made in Alexandria, by the way.
