Well we all had a great time today. I sold or swapped three radios and came back with some original grid leak resistors and a beautiful Healing and National Radio.

I bought the big Healing for $40. I decided to test it today via the isolation transformer, variac and dimbulb and it sprang to life. All it needs is recapping, a new lead and a good clean . What a score.

That Variac, or whatever it is, looks like an accident going somewhere to happen.

That mains cable has to go and the metal body grounded. N.B. a Variac aka "Slide Transformer" is not an isolation transformer.

The National above the Healing is also in my possession. It is actually well made. I inspected it last night and yep all caps will need to be replaced. One person advised the seller to take the Astor Mickey knob off this set (believing it was not original) . In actual fact it was the only original knob on it lol. Astor Bought National out and according to a newspaper advert on radiomuseum it had three Astor Mickey knobs on it. I advised the person whom gave the advice (yes ignorance) and I could feel him giving himself a face slap lol.
This is a nicely made set and looks pretty much straight forward.

Marcc I dont test these sets without taking due care! I actually have a Heavy-duty isolation transformer in the background which was hand built by a engineer. The transformer weighs a back breaking 40 Kilos. All wired wall socket to transformer to variac to dimbulb to radio. Never any other way.

I do Tag & Test and am looking at that round metal bodied thing from that angle. The regulations pertaining to the mains, have pretty much, as far back as the thirties, pointed out that any metal that can become alive and touched, had to be grounded and I can see that thing as being non compliant. In Victoria that would not comply with the "sale of second hand goods" regulations.

I was doing Tag & Test of donated mains stuff: This was a revelation. Of this stuff "Donated in good faith" which in some cases read "dumped"; Something around 10% plus, of this stuff was scary by way of electrical damage and non compliance aside from mechanical defects.

I also get repair stuff here that is scary & has been powered & often damaged in doing so.
