It may have been whilst I had removed the two default files to try and jerk the account back into normality. It worked last week but not today so I sent them another filthy e-mail. To their credit, they gave me same day service this time though it shouldn't be required. I don't think they know what they are doing to be perfectly frank.

It is interesting thart Gmail had a similar outage to VR today. I suppose it can happen even when there is an array of enterprise servers in multiple data centres surrounded by hundreds of trained professionals. The WWW can be a shitfight sometimes.

I don't think they know what they are doing to be perfectly frank.

Just read this review of their support:

"In reality, many customers report incredibly frustrating experiences with trying to actually interact with the support team. Among the most common complaints is the presence of a "Start Chat Now" box on every page of the company website. This leads people to believe that they should be able to initiate a live chat at any time.

However, one customer after another notes that clicking on the live chat box just takes them to an email interface. These incidents happen so often that it's a bit difficult to believe that the live chat function ever works.

Additionally, even when customers do get through to the support team, they report having bad experiences. Response times are slow, and the responses received frequently are unhelpful. If you're trying to operate a business on a website that's hosted on Crazy Domains, then you need immediate, helpful answers. Waiting hours for a questionable response is just not acceptable.

A lack of customer support may not be a problem for the really tech-savvy people out there, but everyone needs help occasionally. Crazy Domains doesn't measure up."

And it's back... I was getting some timeouts, then I got a 404 on the forum index and a 403 on the site main page, then it was back to 500, so I left it for a while.

Unable to connect yesterday due to a long pause followed by error 500. Tried a few times through the day.

Now it's all fine again.

I've experienced error 500 timeouts almost daily, mostly in the late to wee hours, and figured that maybe I was colliding with a backup process.

Backups are not done at the same times and only take about 30 seconds. At the end of the day, this website has been dragged through a lot of crap over the last three or four years and the most recent drama with a webhost's server migration has caused a lot of damage, some of which I cannot find.

One day I will pay someone to build a new site though this is definitely something for down the track but one day it will happen. My career has got well in the road of me doing anything else major with it over the last ten years or so and I can't give the time I'd like to give to replacing the current system, which is nearly 20 years old.

In the interim I will just do my best to keep the site up. It is worth it. Earlier I rebooted the server. Hopefully things are better now.

Brad,

Should you decide to take that path ("----pay someone to build a new site----") please consider accepting donations.

Lots of sites do it, no big deal, a few bucks thrown in from supporters goes a long way.

Plenty of members happy to chip in I'm sure. Completely anonymous, nobody knows (or cares) who donates.

It will go a long way toward helping this fantastic site stay alive.

Give it serious thought please.

Down for hours yesterday. Not even error 500 - it simply timed out.

I got 500 error messages following a long wait.

As Brad said, it's got problems in the code somewhere. (IIRC, a member here has offered to fix it.)
