The latter issue has been resolved but when it was a problem, only this page suffered. The slowness today affected the whole site.

Budget webhosts share servers and pipes across hundreds of customers. Some have better servers and pipes than others but when one is paying as little as I am at the moment, the product reflects the price.

Could be the amount of processing headroom available to run your scripts on a shared server is insufficient when other sites on the same server are simultaneously busy.

Back when we did video servers for schools, we'd have (on site) servers handling 500 simultaneous video streams and running about 70% processor utilisation. On the local LAN that is.

This site is too small to hog CPU resources (I monitored this when hosting it myself) though it would be affected if combined server usage was high - no doubt about that.

All the trouble seems to have started when this site (and probably dozens of others) were shifted from a Perth datacentre to one in Sydney. Whilst I am happy about being closer to the site, I have not been happy with the performance. I still have about six months to go on the current billing cycle but will probably shift the site closer to the renewal date.

Oh, it is what it is. I'm not concerned. I'm
just telling you why I had a double post and as you say it boils down to money etc etc too.
The good news is that it comes in waves so sometimes it's fine .

Pete

My apologies for the site outage over the last three days. It has been quite frustration for all of us, I am sure.

In the long term, I will be shifting the website though I was browsing some alternate providers over the weekend to assist with planning and I didn't really like what I saw but will revisit this at some stage. Unfortunately these days, with it being almost necessary to offer SSL (a secure site), moving a website around is not as simple an exercise as it once was and when a decision is made on where else to go, there will be a period of outage so things can be shifted, tested and then opened up once again.

I have also given some thought to going back to self-hosting, as aside from a period of time where the connection was slowly dying on us (TPG's fault), on average this site enjoyed a far better uptime and far fewer disruptions than is the case at the moment. For this to occur though, infrastructure needs to be set up and I am not in a position to do that at this point in time.

I'll simply take this time to thank all members for their continued loyalty. It is much appreciated.

It is much appreciated.

Thanks Brad, I was wondering what had happened. Good to see it come back.

Very, very slow for several hours.

I'll bet the host didn't appreciate the language-peppered e-mail I sent them but the bottom line is that they deserve it.
