Hello Irext and all others who have commented.
I bought my wife the Kobo Clara HD e-reader for mothers day. I have not given it to her yet.
I feel stupid asking this question I have no idea how to use or download Calibre onto this e-reader.
Do I use a computer then somehow connect this to the e-reader.
I have not unpacked the e-reader yet.
These questions may be too stupid to warrant a reply so I am not really waiting anxiously for any reply from anyone.
I am not computer literate apart from the basic everyday things. I believe it uses a program called overdrive. Wollongong Library users Borrowbox and RB digital and when looking on the Web at overdrive it does not look like many libraries in Australia use it apart from some in South Australia.
I may have wasted money buying this because the main purpose was to use it for downloading e-books from the library. My wife is currently using a tablet which runs out of battery frequently.
I am feeling quite frustrated about it.
Kind Regards Jim.

If it's like the Kindle you set it up with it's own email address and send the e reader files to it.
Alternatively you connect it to a PC via USB and transfer files using an ap such as Calibre (the one I use).
Once you've done it once it becomes pretty easy.
Calibre will also convert different e reader file formats. (sometimes the spelling can be a bit off but quite legible).

Jim’s, just use the Clara HD as it is to start with.
You have made the right decision and it will download from a lot of libraries with overdrive built in.
It’s a Kobo ‘overdrive’ so has some proviso’s.
Most other books from the library can be downloaded with Adobe Digital Editions, free to load onto your computer.
JJ

Hello all still not managing too well with this. I am not sure if it is me or my expectations exceed the device. My main problem is I wanted my wife to be able to borrow ebooks from the Library and put on this Kobo Clara HD. She is currently viewing them on a tablet. Having had two bouts of recent major surgery plus the lock down she is devouring ebooks at a great rate and they get expensive when consumed at this rate. Our Wollongong library does not support overdrive it uses Borrowbox and RB digital. Does anyone know if you can join a library in another postcode location. There are a lot of libraries that do use overdrive unfortunately not ours. I have tried to use Calibre on the computer and it works for Kobo however it is not receptive to buying books from Amazon for an experiment I tried to buy an ebooks I knew was available and it says can't find or something similar. In one case it redirected itself to Kobo.
I think should revert to sitting back in my chair and count the blowflies crawling on the ceiling rather than venture into this technology that I am not designed for.
Regards Jim.

It might pay to talk to your local librarian.
If you strike the right person that really knows about ereaders they will only be too pleased to explain the process.
And it’s all free.

I don't use Calibre to download the files, I just use it to ad them to the Kindle.
You should be able to buy and download them from say Amazon then use Calibre to ad them to your device in the correct format.

Hi Irext.
That is where it goes pair shape I have bought books from Amazon using the drop down menu in Calibre.
Unfortunately they do not load into Calibre they load directly into the Amazon Kindle app and have to be read off a tablet which defeats the purpose of the Kobo e-reader. I have not been able to download a single book into this Calibre app they have all gone into their respective reading apps. Two windows appear when you find a book download or go to store the download part never works because the book has to be purchased first.
Regards Jim
To clarify my problem, I do not know how to get purchased books to load into Calibre I have tried get books and add books.
I have books in Amazon (Kindle) and Kobo I have no idea how to transfer them to Calibre
