This is probably a dopey question does the battery on an e-reader last longer than a tablet. Does an e-reader have any additional advantages over a tablet. I guess at the end of the day it comes down to price. Buy cheap and the battery life between charging will be short. My wife is reading a lot more now she is under house arrest. Her current small tablet runs out of battery in a few hours. So was wondering about buying her an e-reader.
Thoughts please.

E-readers usually have LCDs that work without a backlight, which saves a lot of battery. Smaller, lower power processor too.

Tablets , Brands are everything with Tablets , I ve had lots of Tablets and the Samsung have been great with the battery lasting , The Aldi Tablets are not worth a pinch of poo ! They dont load pages and the battery life is shocking . Ive had a E Reader and I did not like the screen for reading , Plus a Tablet has more use and Functions ,,but get a GOOD Brand ! Andriod does not work well with Ebay and loading Photos , Its a on going problem with a ebay program and Andriod , My pick would be a Good Tab !

I can use my Kobo E-reader for at least a month before recharging. At an hour or two per day.
Great when travelling, can store several hundred books.
Lots of E-books available for free at local library.
Much easier on the eyes as well.

But as when you are reading a real book, you need a reading light. Unless you are in bright sunlight of course.
That's where the E-book excels, in situations where the tablet is completely unreadable.

Well there are e-readers that use “e-ink” displays that are incredibly battery efficient as the display is pulsed once and the book page is written on the screen so effectively the display is off until you refresh it by going to the next page. This allows battery life that lasts for days if not a lot longer but the downside is that it’s not backlit

I should have done some research before I posted this subject. I was not aware of there total incompatibility between Kindle Amazon and Kobo. I assumed you could buy ebooks from any source and read them on either device. How wrong I was! I Kindle Amazon only allows books purchased from Amazon to be read on their reader, so for my intended purpose this is completely useless. I wanted the ability to download library ebooks so if we purchase one it will have to be the Kobo one. From what I have read all the new Kobo models will allow you to down load library ebooks including the cheaper Kobo Clara. Being on aged pension I often have to go for cheap and cheerful.

Yep. I don't like ebooks, but they are cheap and some are only available in that format. With Kindle, I download them via the Kindle PC application, and then convert them to PDF using a 3rd party tool so that I can print out pages when it suits me. I also prefer to use a PDF reader than the lame Kindle reader. Kindle has changed their encryption algorithm a few times but that only encourages clever guys out there in cyberspace to crack it.

I have a Kindle paper white e reader which I've had for quite a few years and I find it very easy on the eye as it looks like a piece of paper.
The battery lasts for many days and you get plenty of warning when the battery is getting low.
As for managing the different formats I use a program called Calibre.
It can convert all the various formats to the one you need.
In my case mobi format.

Hello Irext.
That sounds interesting. I am thinking of buying my wife the budget model Kobo. It would be nice to just splash out and get the top of the range model however we are not in that sort of financial position.
If I do this I might seek advice from you. I am not at that level of computer literacy.
Regards Jim.

I have bought my wife a Kobo Clara e-reader for mothers day. I will keep it till then. I was interested in what GTC's comment on converting the format to text and using a common format across different platforms. How difficult is that to do for a computer ignoramus such as my self? I also have a cheap and nasty reader I bought from Aldi some years ago the brand is Cocoon it was extremely difficult to use everything was loaded onto an SD card if you were lucky enough to get it to do anything. I am thinking it may be able to be reused with this conversion process.
I think I mentioned the wrong person Irext I think you also mentioned changing the format.
Sorry not trying to offend anyone.
Regards Jim

The program for converting and loading e books is called "Calibre".
It's quite intuitive and works very well.
