Not quite first wave, 1958 actually. 90 degree, silicon rectifiers. Still nice but not worth $800

Hi Ian ,
It's a bit Rich.
Very nice set to own though.
The last one I saw sell before that set was about 2 years ago and it sold for 500.
Trouble is the old sets seldom come up anymore. I see late 60s stuff around the place but I'm not interested in the late 60s
And certainly not the 70s.

Pete

In case you are thinking of making your own hand sanitiser, isopropyl alcohol one litre I bought two years ago for $18 (a solvent supplier) is no longer available from them.
A litre of 100% rubbing alcohol is going for $149 pay now on ebay.....

Yes that's right . I can get it from my supplier in Gosford , but as you say the cost is high.
Metho would be the next best thing .
I use it for furniture, electronics, cleaning ,
Germ killing , now I use it for hand wash .

$800! Wow!! Someone must have really wanted it.
Precedent were a bit of a second rate set IMO.
Not in the same league as Pye, Kriesler or AWA etc.
About a year ago I saw a Pye Pedigree complete with it's magazine rack stand for $200 if my memory serves, but it was in Perth dammit.
The only hope these days is a barn find or a garage sale.

Luckily still have 250ml of my original purchase of isopropyl for hand sanitiser, but it won't last long.

Would use methylated spirit, but the safety data sheet describes it as <95% ethanol with <1% denaturant and <5% nonhazardous chemicals. OK for cleaning but not sure about rubbing onto the skin. Will use metho for resistant surfaces.

Ethanol is fine, as is the denaturant, which is what makes it undrinkable but as far as I know it doesn't hurt you on the skin. Methanol is the nasty stuff you need to avoid. I suspect the 5% "nonhazardous chemicals" includes mostly H2O.

To be effective as a hand sanitiser it has to be at least 70% alcohol. Some Isoprop has water added I'm told.

Soap and water is more effective apparently.

"Methanol is the nasty stuff you need to avoid."
I agree - and it does say methylated spirit. So wouldn't buy it online in case of scams. Would buy that at Colesworths - if they have it - if I need more.

"Some Isoprop has water added I'm told."
I buy from Solvent Supply in Sydney, but alas not listed at the moment. All well labeled.

"Soap and water is more effective apparently."
Carry the gel when away from home. Anything to mitigate the risk when soap and what is not to be had.

There was an interesting article on the net in which they tested metho as a germ killer on the hands , Turns out it is very efficient if you add water to the metho.
Reason being that the water slows the evaporation process down leaving more time to kill the nasties.

One interesting point some doctors have said is that people who catch Coronavirus loose their sense of smell and taste in the early symptoms. Cooks who have had it can't even smell Garlic.

Yes there's a critical amount, about 20% as I recall

I haven't hopped on the hand santitiser bandwagon. I don't even use it at work, which is at a hospital. It's an option for those who want the convenience of giving their hands a quick and easy germ kill but without the need for running water, soap and papertowels. Hand sanitiser won't clean your hands any better than warm water and soap though.

RE post#3 dunny rolls.

Well, to my amazement the dunny rolls turned up.
My sarcasm was unfounded.
However note, be very careful buying from this source.
The description is very muddled and the rolls are not "standard" size they are 1/2 size to fit the small dispenser.
Not a problem to me.
The packaging is all in Chinese so these are obviously meant for the Chinese market.
Or made in China and sent to oz? …………. doubt it.
In the end i'll probably use them in the workshop to wipe the Morris's bottom!
Fred.

Seems that every business that has my mobile number and/or my email address is messaging me about the virus and what I should do. Yesterday my bank, Jaycar, my pharmacy and PayPal. This morning it was from the eyeglass shop; this afternoon from Telstra. I haven't heard from Uncle Tom Cobley yet, but I won't be surprised when I do.

Might be a good time to build a still, should be plenty of hoarded potatoes and other vegetables to fuel it, and no need for trips to the grog shop. I am sure there must be a popular mechanics magazine out there somewhere.
OK now where is my list of scrap metal suppliers.

I got two text messages from Telstra yesterday. It pretty much told me to do everything bar giving the phone w ipe down after every phone call. I think all these mobs should stick to their knitting and let the Government dish out the information.
