I've never really noticed a pattern there but I will watch out for it. I replaced the battery in my car last year but I don't remember the date it was done. I keep all tax invoices for car-related spending in the glove box so I will check that tomorrow and report back.

So the phenomenon might be real! Possible that tiny amounts of calcium leaching through the rubber destroys the battery? Reason for only using distilled water for battery top-ups?

Perhaps the concrete cools the bottom of the battery and its fluid, interrupting convection driven circulation within the cells.
This presupposes that convection driven circulation does occur, and that if it does, is vital to the battery's function.
