At around 08:00 on Sunday, 26th June, there will be a loss of access to the site for about one hour. The database will receive a small upgrade to permit the inclusion of a new forum feature. Following this, more routine tasks such as Windows updates and firewall maintenance will be carried out. The site should be available again by 09:00.

Whilst the site is not available a holding page will be displayed.

I'm hoping that new feature is the ability to add images to posts.

Well, I was pondering on keeping it as a surprise but yes it is. The new columns to be added to existing parts of the database will support the feature and they have to be added before the extra code can be added to the site for testing.

Okay, the work on the database is now complete.

When time permits, the work on the rest of the site will continue.

How's this coming along?

I've received this question a few times in the last fortnight.

In short, the database is ready. I am still working on the upload script. It's working but not currently accepting files greater than 180kB which is not ideal as most photos here are between that and 400kB.

The biggest enemy at the moment is time. I work six days a week at the moment so just about everything else is on hold at the moment.

Tonight I did a little more work on the image upload facility. The function is working well so far and the server has been set to permit images of up to 700kB although this may get lowered slightly to 600kB once things are finalised. Most image files submitted by members to date are no more than 350kB once they have been resized so in the long run the trade-off for the privilege of uploading one's own images is that members would need to start doing their own editing, bearing in mind that when you upload anything to anywhere members are subject to their own connection's upload speeds. On ADSL2+ this is a peak of 1Mb/s - fairly quick but not a breaker of the land speed record.

The next task is to provide each member (almost 2,000 people) with a folder for image and document storage. This can be automated but will place a load on the server so it will be done manually as time permits.

Of that 2,000 what percentage would be active posters? I'd venture that 1,500 or more would be lurkers or one-time wonders.

Suggest sequencing that folder task by member activity rate.

Suggest sequencing that folder task by member activity rate.

That is part of the plan. Additionally, those who have become members in the last two years have had their storage folder created by the site, so the number of folders to set up is more like 1,700. Those who have been banned would be last on the list in terms of priority.

Most websites run on the 1% of 1% rule, which is an age old buggery factor to calculate how busy a site gets. This site is a little more busier than that, more like 5% of 10% which means around 100 active users out of the approx. 2,000. Out of that, around half are 'regulars'. Half of that would post more than once a week and then half of that again are engaged in daily conversation.

Brad,
Why am I getting unread front page forum posts message.
Am I missing something?
Sorry if I've posted in the wrong spot.

There's a bug with that thing.

I find that unless I click on Comments, the flag does not get extinguished.

IIRC, Brad has plans to regularize this 'home' section so that it's like the rest of the forum sections.

That's how it works. The orange notice will remain until all new comments are read. Unlike the main forums it is harder to show which threads are unread on the front page. I'll try and think of a way to make it easier. The front page forum is merely a weblog software I wrote back in 1999. The site I wrote it for no longer exists though the software survives here, dressed up a bit to make it look like the other forums.

I meant to type unless I click twice on comments. In other words I have to read them twice. Reading only once does not always clear the flag.

Suggest that you simply do away with dialogue on the front page and leave it for display only.

Make forum announcements its own section, as done on most other forums.

OK, flag gone now.
For a couple of days I thought I was missing out on something.
Still learning.

That is something I planned on doing a few years ago now however I received advice not to go ahead. There are several advantages with having constantly changing content on the home page of a website, mostly to do with search engine optimisation. The content on the front page really doesn't get updated so the front page forum is the only chance to do it to any significant degree.

As always though, I am open to suggestions regarding front page content. I'd say most ideas would be easy to implement but the amount of whatever material there is would need to be large. Not an easy thing to ponder on.

Yes, but I figure that content changes be done periodically, automatically.
