This weekend I will be doing some maintenance work on the site. I will also be finalising a feature suggested for the front page forum by member GTC a while back. If you see any strange site behaviour at all this weekend, including the appearance and subsequent disappearance of test comments on the front page there is no need to worry. It's just me testing things.

This work will take place at various times on the 30th and 31st May.

As of now you should all see an extra message in the sidebar when the following happens on the front page forum:-

1. When a new thread is opened.
2. When a member replies.

The new message will state that there are unread front page forum posts and will be in bold orange text.

To assist with finding the threads that have new comments which are no longer on the front page, a new page will be added that will contain the threads that have unread comments. This will take another week or two to add, though generally speaking, threads on the front page forum are site news articles only these days, and are seldom updated once they are no longer relevant or the event that was announced has taken place.

To clear the new message that appears you need to have visited every page with a new thread or new comments, similar to the main forums. The system does not allow for retrospective addition of unread comments, so there will be no backlog for you to clear.

Like the main forums, this message is not powered by system timestamps or your cookie file. It is internally managed by the forum software, which means no matter what computer you use at a given time (home, work, internet café, etc) the tracking of your unread comments will always be accurate.

Good to hear.

Today I have also done the latest round of Windows updates and have launched a new-look footer for the main site. The old narrow site has the old footer for the time being but has been upgraded to support the same forum highlight feature added here yesterday.

That and posting photos directly is on hold for a bit due to work commitments. These are big jobs unfortunately and bigger than I first pondered. There's another job I want to do too - back in the early days of this site there was a function that allowed people to enlarge the text on the site without blowing the rest of the site out of proportion and it was dispensed with when the forums were first launched - deemed a bit too high tech for the time, but now I'd like to bring that back. The narrow version of this site still exists in the meantime because it allows members with bad eyes to magnify the site without it going off the page.
