I applied power through my recently made bulb limiter, and the radio works pretty well. The pots are scratchy, the tone and balance controls don't seem to work, but there is a good strong sound coming from both speakers. The turntable does turn, but the speed won't budge from 78, so I'll have to look at that. It's interesting to hear that the amplifier is optimised for those small elliptical speakers. That's something I wouldn't have realised. Now I should get the chassis out and inspect it, clean the pots and maybe replace the filter caps, although I didn't notice much of a hum. The amplifier section of the cabinet opens at the top with a hinge, and it should be simple to undo the correct screws to get the chassis out. MonochromeTV.........if you can post the diagrams and any other info for the Garrard 1000 I'd be grateful. They'll come in handy when I come to tinker with the turntable. Thanks again guys....all this info is extremely helpful. Cheers.

No need to change the electros, they will be blue Ducons and at that age are almost certain to be OK. If it works with the lamp in series that means excessive current isn't being drawn. Just squirt some CRC in the pots and you'll be good.

Unless there is visible leakage of electrolyte from the electros, and you have no hum, don't let anyone tell you that you need to change them. By the time your chassis was made, Ducon had got pretty good at making capacitors (it took them long enough and some looming competition from the Japanese!) and those caps you have in that chassis will still be good.

Record changer - you have the solidified oil syndrome, the speed change mechanism is frozen. Keeping well away from the rubber on the idler pulley, a CRC soak for a day will free up the frozen mech. You'll quickly see how it works.

But I may be getting ahead of myself....

You may have trouble getting the turntable off for the same reason. CRC is your friend there too. A few drops around the centre bearing, let it soak, remove the C clip, rotate and pull up.

Thanks again Ian. It's so good having experienced advice to guide me. The filter caps are indeed blue Ducons. And they do look ok. No bulging or leakage that I can see, and there's not really any noticeable hum. I can't see any fried resistors or other problems. I've taken the chassis out and, although I'm always careful, I've shrinkwrapped and resoldered the mains and HT connections on the power transformer and on/off switch, just to be sure. Just about to power it up again. I don't think I know what CRC is, but I've got some cleaning spray from Jaycar, with and without lube. I'll try that first. When the amplifier is going well I'll tackle the turntable.

CRC 2.26 spray. On the can it says "makes things work again". True.

A valve a day keeps the transistor away...

Thanks for the Garrard 1000 info. The amplifier section seems to be working well, apart from some dirty pots. I'll probably start a new thread when I start on the turntable. I'm sure there'll be a bunch of questions. Cheers.
