So I got my HMV "Stratford" 3 in 1 on Tuesday.

I took the back off to find a graveyard of dead bugs and what I think was mice pooh.
The wiring and leads seem to be okay from what I can see.

I am going to have to take the Radio unit out because there is more debris caught behind it that I can't get to.

CRT is a Thomas and Turntable is a Garrard 2025TC

Thomas tube is likely a regunned one. Check for the tell tale bump on the neck under the yoke.

Hmm you might be lucky.
I have a 1958 Philips and in 1971 they replaced the CRT!
Amazing! 3 years later colour arrived.
Often they write the date on the CRT , perhaps you can find a date on it
I had my CRT tested and it was 100 percent.
The chassis has been rebuilt now and so it might last me out!
Pete

No, that Thomas CRT is factory fitted original.

I used to do warranty service on these when new and at that stage EMI were using Thomas CRTs from the Riverwood plant.

I can remember sometimes ordering a regunned tube from Thomas and actually receiving a brand new one.
The fast start(more filament current) ended up being the most troublesome.

So, looks like the Chassis is a goer.......

Ian Robertson worked his magic with the dim bulb and it came up fine
Ian reckons it's a low mileage chassis

Might just need a couple of replacement valves and a good clean

Rat/rats have lived in the cabinet......
I retrieved the mummified carcass of one today.

I need to get a couple of stubborn screws out so I can remove the Radio and see what if any damage the rodents have done

Thank you again Ian Robertson for all your help, knowledge and passion for vintage TV's

Yes it's suffering from having those short life DECAL valves - 6U9, 6X9, 6Y9. Usual symptoms, low IF gain. It'll probably need a new 6GV8 in the vertical too.

Normally you don't need to replace IF valves in vintage TVs....

So, with a lot of patience and perseverance I have managed to budge the two stubborn screws and withdraw the tuner and amplifier unit.

Much to my relief the unit is intact and no visible damage at all from the mice 😅

The speaker unit is sealed from this compartment so I am hopeful the speaker cones are okay 🤞

Just need to get the Garrard turntable out now which shouldn't be too difficult

I think I will carefully photograph and remove the CRT so I can vacuum and clean the inside of the cabinet properly without the risk of inadvertently necking it !

I have carefully cleaned where the mice have peed and I have baking powder on it now to hopefully remove the odour.

I am quietly optimistic this stylish unit will eventually come up nice.

Stephen, your 6U9 - 6X9 - 6Y9 valves are on the way from TubeDepot in the US. On the 26th February they were in Miami, Florida.

I got a quote for them from Evatco in QLD but their prices were on average 3 times that of TubeDepot, even after exchange rate and shipping! I would have liked to support Evatco but they are too far off the money.

I would have liked to support Evatco but they are too far off the money.

I get the impression their main customer base for valves is guitarists, who seemingly are prepared to pay whatever.

Another source of valves locally is the HRSA Valve Bank, a service available to members.

Ian

It's sad we couldn't support the Aussie seller ☹️

However I am just glad we can get them at all

It’s a pity the Wanted and For Sale section of this forum is not operational.
I’m sure there are plenty of 6X9, 6U9 and 6Y9’s available NOS in the stocks that some of us old TV repairers have.

Yep, no other platforms and most of us hoard stuff! And are looking for parts.
I have tons of TV and Radiogram parts.
None of which is new , but knobs chassis ,speakers , cabinets.
Cloth. Plus I'm still looking for a Jackson chassis. Pete
