If it is a date code it would probably mean 31 June or July 51. Not 1941 going on Brad's experience of the cabinet style.

Unfortunately the licence sticker is rather the worse for wear. A close up without any flash reflection would be needed to tell if there is anything left to read.

The 6V6 is a GT not a G. Black was quite usual for 6V6GT valves - it would be the getter to soak up the last of the gas after evacuation, or shielding sprayed on the inside. If you can see through it, it is getter.

That set should clean up nicely. Recapping ought to be relatively easy as there is plenty of room to get at them -- not like some chassis.

Hi Bart.
I too think the chassis may be of Radio Corp (Astor) origins.
Could you take a close up picture of the letters stamped on the chassis. That'll tell me for sure. Astor chassis punches are quite distinctive.

I have been able to read off the values from some of the capacitors on the radio and I was wondering if it is safe to replace these with ones with the matching values or wait until I can identify the unit better and have a schematic and know exactly what the values are to get replacements.
Some of the electrolytic capacitors show a rating of; 8MFD 525PV, 25MFD 40PV, 16MFD 525MFD 525PV.

I have emailed a couple of close up images of the stamped letters on the chassis as well.

Many thanks for the help.

"I was wondering if it is safe to replace these with ones with the matching values or wait until I can identify the unit better and have a schematic and know exactly what the values are to get replacements."

The usual rule with caps is try for same value or slightly higher -- never lower. That applies particularly to the working voltage of the electrolytics. Also, when replacing electros, be sure to double check that the polarity is correct on each of them before you power up.

From the photos, I think you can reasonably safely assume that those are original or reliably correct components.

It's sounding more and more as if the chassis is from the Astor line. This being the case if I may obtain the schematic or details of this unit would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Bart Smile

Okay, I've sent you what I have for the model HQ of 1951/52. Let's hope that it's the one, or close enough.

The parts and alignment data sheet isn't a very clear scan and will need some magnification. Let me know if it's unreadable and I'll see what I can do to improve it.

"I can do the Astor & Monarch schematics from AORSM."

I assumed these were in AORSM, but they are not, so can't help.

Thanks GTC for the email with attached docs, unfortunately I can't match very many of the components.

From the list of Australian Radio Manufacturers;
1940 | 551 | DP AC BC Con. | 5 | 455 | 6A8G, 6U7G, 6B6G, 6V6G, 5Y3G | TMRSM | 68 |;
what does the "TMRSM" stand for.

what does the "TMRSM" stand for.

I suppose we can reliably guess that RSM is radio service manual, but I don't know what the TM bit is.

Whoever compiled that index probably knew all of those abbreviations but he/they didn't bother to provide a reference legend for the rest of us.

It's an oversight that I've been meaning to take up with the HRSA, and now will.

The list of Aussie models was developed by Stuart Irwin who provided a description of the abreviations and sources of the information for each model.

This description somehow did not make it with the list which is on the HRSA website.

I have a copy of this description which I could email to anyone interested.

TMRSM Those Missing Radio Service Manuals. A HRSA publication.

Cheers, Graham...
