I've seen ECH35 without the red metal paint, but not nearly as common as the red ones. It's not a case of the paint having fallen off, as the valve type is clearly printed on the glass. Yes, I've seen them too. I recall that the glass envelope is particularly dark with those types.

I wonder if the darkness is some kind of metal impregnation to act as a shield. Or maybe something has been sprayed on the inside before construction.

It was common to spray the inside of the glass with black to aid heat dissipation.

I love the advertisement. I'm slowly getting the polish off the cabinet and its coming away quite easily. I thought it was Shellac but I'm informed it is a nitrocellulose lacquer. This would make them quite flammable i'd have thought. I'm likely to put a coating of shellac. Its easy and should give a very similar result. Does anyone have any major objections? The polish is just peeling off and only requires heavy sanding in a few places. The veneer is still in pretty good nick and it certainly looks like the picture in the advertisement. Marcc: I've sent you an email with a picture of the ECH35 valve. I can send Brad a copy if anyone else wants a copy. Thanks again folks.

The ECH35 is a very dark valve. Its clearly deliberately done. Its a coating on the inside. It has a very straight and level top edge and bottom edge. Its clear for about an inch at the top and an inch and a half at the bottom.

Stepping back: The black caps are paper, some had a bad habit of cracking the jacket & shorting, just cracking the jacket and the normal leaking like a sieve. However, the AWA pF ones are damn near indestructible.
