Hi GTC,

If you still have it, would you be able to send me a copy of the HMV C25A service manual (and any other info you might have), please?
Trying to repair one of these at the moment and this would really help!

Hugely appreciated!
Cheers

TV Collector managed to decode the JR black and white TV series, but his explanation went right over my head. Still too confusing for me.

Just be aware that the HMV C25A radio is a 6 volt accumulator (car battery) vibrator set. These sets were typically used in country areas (farms) where there was no 240 volt mains available.

Do not even dream of fitting a 240 volt mains plug. Bang!

At best you'll destroy the valves. At worst you'll destroy unobtainable parts.

I have actually sent info to HRSA, on a 32V STC that was sent out a few month ago. It came in with a Bakelite mains plug.

I can understand how it happened and it does raise the point as to why I cannot easily find NEMA plugs & sockets to put on 115V equipment to stop it getting 240V plug tops.

After what I have seen from the bureaucracy lately, I would have serious doubt as to them understanding the danger from this situation.

32V gear should have the polarised "T" plug tops fitted, though I suppose at the end of the day it is all down to what socket the customer has. Clipsal make both the American pattern for 110V applications and the T pattern ones for 32V, or "extra low voltage" in industry parlance. Surface sockets are also made for both patterns.

What is needed the most is a widespread education programme for all collectors that putting a 240V plug top on a radio that does not run on mains power is not only illegal but generally just not acceptable from a safety standpoint.

A valve a day keeps the transistor away...

The HMV C25A uses two large battery clips connected to the end of a power lead that can often be mistaken for a mains cord.

It is not unknown that a 240 volt mains plug has been attached to a vibrator set power lead and the ensuing fireworks that follows.
