So it looks like the line up is 80, 47, 57, 58, 57

Marc's earlier comment about STC chassis colour may be a clue.

You must've missed the 12th post. It is a 5 pin, just the picture perfectly obscures the fifth pin (apologies)

Information on the Radiomuseum & NZVRS sites suggests the Radion brand was made by the Wellington firm of Collier & Beale.

"Smoke 555, they're good for you"

That's hilarious.

"Smoke 555, they're good for you"

In the early 1950s my mother was told by a doctor to take up smoking for her asthma! She gave it a go but the smoke nearly killed her.

Wow that advert is great! Well done on finding that I would've never found it. A schematic would be very helpful when it comes to trouble shooting this. I'm probably going to wait a while before I delve into finding the problem that is causing it to make no sound as I have a AWA 449MA on the bench at the moment which I'm pretty much rebuilding (had original AWA caps and rubber wires, all wrecked). Thinking ahead is a value of 50% tested in 1992 really good enough or am I going to have to find some better valves when I come to fixing the Radion? If so how do I acquire them? My relatively small valve collection is pretty well 90% miniature valves therefore I don't have any of the ones needed for this.

I've since found a number of ads for Radion in the NZ papers including the one in Brads ebay link. Almost all the ads suggest they were distributed by Todd Motors of most major centres in NZ.

My theory now is that Radion was the house brand for Todd Motors and was manufactured for them by Collier & Beale.

Todd Motors had a auto assembly plant in Petone near Wellington. They assembled Chrysler, Rootes Group (Hillman, Humber, etc) and later on Mitsubshi vehicles.

It reminds me of all the old smoking ads we had back in the 1970s and before. They portrayed smokers as rugged blokes who could cop anything this hard old country threw at them, successful businessmen or even women being elevated to the social class all because they smoked.

Winfield.
Marlboro.
Dukes.
Craven.

Of course, that all lead to this...

Yul Brynner - 'Whatever you do, just don't smoke'.

I have to say, with the cost of cigarettes these days, I am surprised that smoking is still being taken up. They sure as hell ain't 4 bob a pack now.

Back to the topic at hand, the NZVRS site doesn't have a search feature. There's a link to Collier and Beale but nothing relevant to Audion that I can see.

More ads from New Zealand:-

It seems there are 3 models in the same cabinet:- "Australasia", "Pacific" & "All Wave".

I wonder which one them is yours?

At the end of the day I could not get a circuit for a 1932 EMMCO nor the STC 59 chassis and HRSA did not have the 59 Chassis circuit either. I now have one, but with unavoidable mods & I sent a copy with the radio.

I ended up with both, using the AutoCad to make a nice tidy one. The EMMCO went into Silicon Chip as a mystery, that resulted in a couple of letters to SC identifying it.

I doubt there will be huge difficulties reverse engineering it & sorting it out, without the circuit. As I said an Autodyne is an Autodyne and those are a common line up.

Stress levels not high here re fixing it.

Marc

There's a link to Collier and Beale but nothing relevant to Audion (I think you meant Radion) that I can see.

There are four 1930's Radion models in the NZVRS Collier & Beale list.

Another thing I picked up in the same list is a 1936 "Parliament" model, but there is no mention of the Radion brand. Here is a 1936 ad for the "Parliament" set and it is clearly a Radion.

O/T: I note the reference in the adjacent ad to a film being made in Sydney in 1936. Yet another reminder of a once thriving industry lost.

I would wonder if the Parliament version has more valves & creates more hot air? Or were the valves prone to going gassy?

Marc
