I have only heard about it, but from multiple sources now.

What I'm trying to say is I think it's more the guitarist crowd that would feel the benefit of the way
valves break up "musically" over solid state clipping.
The typical valve radio or music buff I imagine wouldn't be driving their amps that hard.

If you Google image search "valve amp even harmonics" this is your first result:
http://www.guitar-list.com/files/u1/harmonic-distortion-graph.jpg.

You can tell that 1kHz test tone is the fundamental which is identical level on both amps.
A proper demonstration would require a bit more data of course, but some digging would find it.

It's not breaking news, though the Currawong Amplifier kit is now being advertised by Altronics for $650.00. A big portion of the price will be for the eight valves though it is not a stopper for me. In due course I will be looking forward to building this and then making a set of speakers for it.

Did AWV make 6L6s and 12AX7s? If so the addition of some NOS Super Radiotrons would be a nice touch. Smile

A valve a day keeps the transistor away...

AWV did make locally 12AX7s, but not 6L6's. 6L6's were not made in this country & it is likely AWV would've imported US made RCA 6L6 types.

Silicon Chip has published notes and errata for the 'Currwong' in the March issue.

Nice job Garyoz.

Just a note to say that Silicon Chip has published in the October 2016 issue a revised power supply using a single toroidal transformer in place of the two in the original design (one of which has been discontinued).

The new transformer is Altronics MA5399:

230V 160VA
2 x 115V 0.5A
2 x 6.3V 1A
1 x 12.6V 2A

I note that after using one in an 11-20 that Jaycar have discontinued AS-3010 5" speaker which was a drop in fit for 11-20 and others. Transformer ended op inside the pan.

If you could salvage the transformer out of one of those old Philips line Amps with 6CM5's & more than two of them, that would save. I have one with two of them & with what it's capable of running, its a savage beast. The 6CM5's can draw 100mA each max .300V plate (class B)

Whilst not the wattage there is a 6BM8 data sheet with a circuit with no OP transformer.
