For the record: I experienced a period of lockout due to 500 errors between 3pm and 4pm today.

Me too.

I guess the new server isn't quite ready yet.

Hi All, every time I log in maybe once or twice a day the site just loads up and works fine. Seems faster when changing pages that it was say 6 months ago. I have fast internet on this G4 laptop 25 mps download, 15mps upload. If I use ADSL the VR site clunks along like everything else does 4mps download, 0.7 mps upload. Maybe a lot of performance restrictions are at the user end?
Cheers, Fred.

Fred, as mentioned already, type 500 errors are associated with characteristics of the server hardware and software, not the client (browser).

Yes, perceived speed at the client end is a function of line speed, but with type 500 errors there is no service at all.

Since Brad's recent upgrade of the server hardware the situation has improved dramatically.

We are logging here instances of type 500 errors in order to provide Brad with empirical data about them.

Please do keep the events coming, as all the information is helping.

I agree that there's been a big improvement but there is still a few things that need tidying up.

To be honest I don't think the fault has been found. The improvement has come from a more powerful server that is able to withstand whatever the problem is a bit better. With much of the front page gone now, there is also a lesser load on the database, with far fewer queries being sent just to provide information of a secondary priority.

Every Sunday that I can spare some time I will be working on a gradual recode of everything, bit by bit, until the error is gone.

Unfortunately, such errors don't pick a time of day to happen. I've run into a few myself and fully understand the frustration it causes. I've even had a few at work, on 10Gbit fibre connections, so speed is not a factor either. Just some coding mistake that I made, probably years ago and just managing to show its face in the last year or so.

Irregular connection losses have happened tonight due to Internet issues. I have TPG looking at things and they'll let me know what's going on, most likely tomorrow afternoon.

Have been experiencing intermittent periods of no response since about 8pm tonight. Website availability check sites reported the site as down due to no response during a preset timeout period.

A repeat of the connection issue two nights ago. A complaint has been filed with TPG.

It's been quite annoying because it seems to happen at a particular time of the day and repeated reboots of the modem don't appear to have much effect, then after the 14th reboot everything comes good again. Same deal on both nights.

I would be interested in how the modem gets to TPG? Mine is NBN via a tower with no redundancy & it fails on average every six to 7 weeks.

The other issue here is underground cabling. They have these wonderful connectors full of Silicone (rather like Jaycar HP-1214 to look at) every five years these fail. They either leak to ground, one another, or corrode & develop resistance. I have finally got Telstra to cut out a bad section, & all connections on the property are now well above ground level. Infeed cable for landline is 600m.

TPG has their own exchange equipment inside Telstra exchanges in metro areas and they use Telstra's "last mile" to go from there to customer premises.

It's just strange that on two separate nights this week there's been an issue with the connection, yet at all other times it is fine.

At last, I had a 'cant reach page' 1-49 pm today.
Fred.

TPG are going to run some checks on the line and their systems and get back to me tomorrow. Hopefully they will have some good news.
