To the usual timeout problem, I can now add this message which I have encountered twice today:

"Your connection is not secure

The owner of vintage-radio.com.au has configured their website improperly. To protect your information from being stolen, Firefox has not connected to this website."

The certificate is current. Some pages on the site contain content that is not 'secure' and includes mainly avatars. If you navigate to the home page it should state that the site is secure, with the padlock showing in the browser.

If it happens again, I'll try to determine which page(s) trigger it.

It'll be most likely any page with an avatar linked from a standard HTTP source. I've no doubt all the forum thread lists will contain such avatars. Thread pages that contain only avatars linked from here or Gravatar should be normal secure HTTPS pages with the padlock.

I have only begun to experience it today, so the timing ought to contain a clue. Any new avatars in the last 24 hours?

PS: have you had a look at the forum package I emailed you about?

No new avatars recently, that I am aware of. Members can assign their own in their control panels but the system doesn't log this activity.

I don't recall an e-mail with a suggestion for a forum package to be honest. Though this may be because life is very busy outside of vintage radio at the moment and I haven't spent a lot of time here in the last few months.

On that subject though, I am starting to doubt anything is wrong with the current system and think that the connection is more responsible for the issues we've experienced for the last year or so more than anything else. My Internet has been almost non-existent after 19:00 almost every night for the last six months. The ISP claims nothing is wrong at their end and I have a new business-grade Cisco modem here.

Because of the bad connection I've been using my laptop through my phone, with the resultant bill shock. My plan to use a new ISP has hit a hurdle because I wanted DSL and the NBN is available. I can't yet shift to the NBN for reasons I can't disclose here. So for the moment I am stuck with what I have.

Sent again to valves.

I'm using Firefox, and my avatar is on a http server, and I have no trouble gaining access. The only problem is the usual one, if I don't wait 5-10 seconds between clicks, the site freezes.

However, I've had trouble in the past with Firefox refusing access to some site. I mean, how DARE some lousy browser dictate what I can look at? Big brother at work.

Edge and IE will block access to a page with an expired SSL certificate but it brings up a page that gives you the option of whether to carry on or follow the advice to refrain.

The thing is, a site doesn't suddenly become dangerous just because of an expired certificate. It just means that the HTTPS connection cannot be verified by a certificate issuer as a safe site. A few years ago I forgot to renew the certificate for this site and the browser messages sent the world into a panic.

These problems are going to become more commonplace. Some years ago the only sites that relied on the HTTPS protocol were banking and government sites, where security of passwords was vitally important. Nowadays, there's numerous unelected bodies telling us all that the ghosts of hackers past will get us all if we do not upgrade sites from HTTP to HTTPS. Vintage Radio was done about five or six years ago and it's just another thing an administrator has to keep in mind - renewing SSL certificates.
